Diego Rivera

1934

Mexican Muralism

An iconic yet controversial fresco that was destroyed before it even reached completion, this artwork embodies the intense ideological struggles of the time it was conceived in. Originally commissioned for New York City’s Rockefeller Center by the eponymous family themselves, this painting was meant to reside in the building’s lobby as its crown jewel. As a symbol of what was meant to be a hidden protest against the capitalists who commissioned it, Rivera had painted in Vladimir Lenin, Karl Marx and a Soviet Russian Parade which were noticed by a journalist and branded “anti-capitalist propaganda”. When the artist denied Norman Rockefeller’s demand to remove these, Rockefeller had the incomplete fresco swiftly destroyed and replaced. However, Rivera had already anticipated this and taken black-and-white photographs of the incomplete mural, which he then later used to recreate a smaller version of it called Man, Controller of the Universe that still resides in his home country of Mexico.
